What marketing isn't

What is marketing, anyway?

Definitions abound, but one thing marketing isn't, is simply pushing your name out there randomly to anyone who will listen.

Instead, it’s about building relationships. Avoid blowing your entire marketing budget on a single marketing method, such as advertising, and focus on investing your time, energy and imagination into starting and developing closer ties with potential, current and past customers.

As with any relationship, trust is scant at the beginning. You don't know them, they don't know you.

So take the lead in putting your potential customers' minds to rest and starting the relationship off slowly and positively. Make a great first impression, then follow through by demonstrating a helpful, positive and trustworthy attitude.

Building your customer's trust in you should be paramount in today's cynical times.

How many ways do you use in your marketing to prove a credible and trustworthy image?

I find writing articles in

I find writing articles in local magazines about things that interest my potential clients works really well, and lots of magazines don't charge for useful and interesting articles, as long as they're not blatent advertising. I hope my writing encourages people to realise I know what I'm talking about. My monthly newsletter contains things I hope my potential clients find useful, and some readers have refered their friends to it as well. Also, my intention for my my free-to-download articles on my website is to also add to my credible, trustworthy image. I want people to realise I like to help!

For my type of "selling myself not a visible product" business, I find networking works really well too and I agree that it's all about building relationships with the people there.... I've had lot of business from people who go to the events, and their friends and family who they refer to me after having a few sessions themselves!

I do still find the phone doesn't ring as much from my writing, newsletter and free-documents as I'd like.... So if anyone has any advice I'd be really greatful!

Thanks!

Heather
